Monday Reflections: Changing Majors

As stated in the description part of this blog will be used for you faithful readers to see our journey to reach our dream starting our freshman year here at Southern Methodist University. When I first came to SMU I was a Piano Performance Major(I auditioned and got it). However once I started the major I became disillusioned, I thought that the majority of the classes were pointless. Music Theory and Musicianship Aural Skills) I didn't think was pointless it just didn't come as easily to me as it seemed to everyone else. My studio class with a very esteemed professor was doing okay but I wasn't feeling myself at all. When I came to SMU I loved piano(and I still do) but I never have wanted to be a concert pianist or really do anything with piano. I think it's the business part of my brain that screams "there's no opportunities here".

I originally chose piano at the encouragement of my former piano teacher Karina. Karina and I have a beautiful relationship, she understands me perfectly and our time together have been some of the best moments of my life. I can't thank her enough, she has made me into a musician not just a pianist and she has always believed in me. And I believe in myself I have enough talent to do well in Piano but I had to think was the time spent really going to be worth it in the long run? Especially if one's dream was to work in the business aspect of music?  The answer to that question was a resounding no.

It took me a long time to realize this(I have played the piano for thirteen years now) my talent when I play the piano doesn't come from my technique or the amount of years I've played but from me. When I play the piano and truly enjoy it I put a piece of myself into it. I can give this piece of my creative self into just about everything I do not just piano. So I'm going to be brave and insert a clip of me playing Schubert Impromptu in A flat Major my sophomore year of high school.

So I sat down and talked to Reed an RA here at SMU who has changed his majors three times since he's been here. He's one of the most supportive people I have ever met, he encouraged me to go out there and search for my passion. And so I researched online, what skills would I need to achieve my goals of one day owning my own indie record label but first working in the music industry and I decided that advertising seemed to match my talents the best while giving me a job opportunity.

Friday Favorite

I think I am late in this but I was listening to Kelly Clarkson when I heard her latest single from her album: "Greatest Hits: Chapter One" Catch my breath which is the lead single. I have loved Kelly Clarkson since I saw her on American Idol and this new song sounds a lot like Pink and it's one of those feel good songs that I need to listen when I'm down and I need that extra punch to jumpstart my day. Here go listen to it, if you need a pick me up this song is perfect!

Have a good weekend ya'll and if you guys have any song suggestions to give us comment below. I am working on getting this blog a bloglovin and a way for you guys to suggest songs to us!

Introducing: Young Guns

I was introduced to this band by my best friend Jarret. He said he discovered this band while on Amazon trying to find music and he clicked on them because he was intrigued by the cover art of their album. Today I sat down and decided to give them a listen and man was I impressed.
[Gustav Wood, Fraser Taylor, John Taylor, Simon Mitchell and Ben Jolliffe]

I love their music, they are a flashback to the golden era of rock'n'roll and really remind me of bands such as the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. They are a UK rock'n'roll band based in London who released their ep "Mirrors" in 2009 which featured fan favorites like Daughters of the Sea and Weight of the World. In July of 2010 the band released their second album under their own label, Live Forever, it debuted on the UK album chart at no. 43 and peaked at no. 3 on both the UK rock and indie charts. This album featured songs like Sons of Apathy, Winters Kiss, Stitches and Weight of the World from their EP. In 2012 they released their second studio album entitled Bones with singles such as Bones and Dearly Departed(which quickly became one of my favorites).

“Because a song can take you back instantly to a moment, or a place, or even a person. no matter what else has changed in you or the world, that one song stays the same, just like that moment.”
